The Greenwich Tree Conservancy and Greenwich Audubon are partnering to host our December Fit in the Forest. This will be a brisk fitness walk through the trails at Greenwich Audubon Center. Enjoy the benefits of exercise along with the fresh air and beauty of our urban forests. Tree features will be highlighted throughout the walks. These walks will be guided by tree and fitness enthusiasts, not professionals.

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy and the Greenwich Land Trust are partnering to host a Foliage Tree Walk to enjoy the colors of fall and learn more about our local trees. GLT’s Dan Brubaker will lead us on a walk through Westfall Preserve in Greenwich. Located off North Street, Westfall Preserve connects to the vast 300-acre Babcock Preserve and is maintained as a natural area.
The walk will be moderate.
Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for trails in early November.

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy and Perrot Memorial Library are joining together to bring you this informative talk from Margery Winters on the importance of declining and dead trees.
Once considered a wasted resource and a hazard in forest landscapes, dead trees and logs are now known to be valuable and essential parts of a healthy forest ecosystem. Join Margery Winters, Assistant Director and instructor at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, to learn how dead and dying trees provide habitat and food for many terrestrial and aquatic species, act as seedbeds for new trees, and serve as a source of water, energy, carbon, and nutrients for the entire forest.

Please join the Greenwich Tree Conservancy and Town Tree Warden, Dr. Greg Kramer, on this informative night time walk to discover what nature at Montgomery Pinetum looks like after dark.
You will have a new understanding of lichens, moss, fungi, and mushrooms as their fluorescent mineral make up comes to life illuminated by ultraviolet light.
Walking will be moderate. All ages are welcome and comfortable shoes are recommended.

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy and Greenwich Botanical Center bring to the stage explorer, writer, and Discovery Channel host Justin Fornal for a talk on the Magnificent World of Birch.
He will take guests on a historic ethnobotanical odyssey of humankind from the perspective of the birch tree. Ötzi the iceman’s medicine pouch, witch’s broomsticks, sacred whisks, fertility nectars, and beloved soft drinks are just a few of the topics covered in this lecture. Guests over 21 years of age will also be invited to sample alcoholic beverages distilled from birch tree sap.

Arbor Adventures: A Family Tree Walk

Montgomery Pinetum
Join GTC for this family-friendly tree walk at Montgomery Pinetum.
The Montgomery Pinetum is a captivating park which showcases a diverse array of conifer trees from around the globe. Families will learn about the park’s rich history and discover its remarkable trees while exploring the Pinetum with our knowledgeable guide. Leading the way is Joe Kay, the Deputy Tree Warden and Operations Manager for the town of Greenwich, and a local expert on trees and how they grow. This activity is recommended for children ages 5 – 12.
Parents or guardians must stay with children for the duration of the activity
Walking will be moderate, please come dressed for the weather.
Space is limited; you must be registered to attend.
2024 Treasured Trees Nominations are Now Open through July 15th!
The Greenwich Tree Conservancy’s Treasured Trees Program highlights special trees on private properties to create respect for the many beautiful and unique trees to be found throughout our community.
Winners will be selected by our 2024 judges Sam Bridge of Sam Bridge Nursery and John Conte of Conte & Conte. Treasured Trees are scored on ornamental value, uniqueness, pedigree, size, age, and most of all, the personal story of the tree. Winning entries will be awarded a framed photograph of their tree at the Treasured Trees Celebration in the Fall and have a nameplate installed. They will be featured on the Greenwich Tree Conservancy’s roster of Treasured Trees.

Darrin and Joe will go over all the basic methods, tools and safety and then demonstrate technique around the Pinetum. This workshop is proudly co-hosted with The Greenwich Botanical Center.

Trees, Birds, Butterflies and More!

Join us in partnership with the Greenwich Audubon for a special outdoor tour of the Greenwich Audubon trails!
The mature trees of Greenwich enable us to live alongside a breathtaking variety of bird life. Trees offer birds of all sizes a place to rest, sheltered spots to raise their young, sources of food, and places to look out on their world. Join Ryan MacLean and Lisa Beebe for a walk to learn about the beautiful trees at Audubon Greenwich and the birds that live amongst them. Binoculars will be available for anyone who needs a pair.
Program Fee: Admission is FREE but donations are encouraged. Your contributions help support our conservation work, including advocating for the protection of birds and the habitats they depend on for survival.
Registration is required. Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Updates from Greenwich Land Trust’s American Chestnut Orchard
Tuesday, September 26th at 1:00 pm
GTC and the Greenwich Land Trust are partnering to host a special program at GLT’s American Chestnut Sanctuary. Guests will explore the test orchard and learn about the most recent efforts to restore blight resistant American Chestnuts back into the wild. They will also get a first-hand view of what a blight infection can look like, what can be done for infected trees, and what the expectations are for the orchard over the next 5 or 10 years.

Greenwich Tree Conservancy and Friends of Greenwich Point are partnering to offer a Tree Walk at 1:00PM on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Greenwich Point. The walk will be led by Lisa Beebe, Greenwich Town Arboretum curator, and Dr. Gregory Kramer, Greenwich Superintendent of Parks and Trees and Tree Warden. Beebe has labeled over fifty trees at Greenwich Point as part of the town arboretum. Space is limited; you must be registered to attend.

Winter Walk:
Identifying Trees without Leaves
February 7th – 1:00pm-2:30pm
GTC is excited to partner with Greenwich Land Trust and offer guests a chance to learn how to identify tree species during the winter at GLT’s new Converse Brook Preserve. On this guided forest walk, we will discuss ways to look closer at the diverse features of bark, branches, and buds to see a varied winter landscape. Sturdy, waterproof footwear along with warm clothes are recommended.

Walking Tour of Montgomery Pinetum

As part of the Greenwich Historical Society’s “Discover Greenwich” Program, we welcome you to explore Montgomery Pinetum with a guided walking tour that highlights the historic park’s impressive and inspiring display of natural beauty. The tour is organized by the Greenwich Historical Society and the Greenwich Tree Conservancy.
The tour will be led by Lisa Beebe, Curator of the Town Arboretum as well as Director of Horticulture at the Greenwich Botanical Center. The tour will feature an in-depth look at the nature and history of the park’s gardens and trails. Learn more about the story of conservationist and preservationist Colonel Robert H. Montgomery, namesake of the Pinetum, and the various trees that grow there today.

Shady Lanes Initiative
The Greenwich Tree Conservancy, in keeping with its vision of a healthy and beautiful town-wide community forest, announced in April 2011, its new Shady Lanes Initiative to select three main roadways each year to plant and steward trees. The 2011-2012 selected roads are: lower Lake Avenue, Sound Beach Avenue and Hamilton Avenue.

Please join Dr. Gregory Kramer for a walk through beautiful Bruce Park to enjoy its varied and majestic trees. Bruce Park is the first park to be mapped by GTC for our town wide ArbNet accredited Arboretum.

Trees Without Leaves Winter Tree Walk Monday, January 27th 1-3 PM On this guided walk through the 40-acre Lapham Preserve we will show you ways to look closer at the diverse features of bark, branchesand buds to understand better the rich varied winter landscape. Walk covers some mixed terrain. All ages are welcome. Sturdy, waterproof footwear along with warm clothes are recommended. No charge. Please sign-up HERE.
