Putnam Avenue (Route 1) Beautification Plan

The Putnam Avenue (Route 1) Beautification Plan is the culmination of five years of dedicated effort by the Greenscape Committee, a collaborative group including Town of Greenwich employees, elected officials, and local nonprofit leaders such as the Greenwich Tree Conservancy. United by the vision of transforming Putnam Avenue into a tree-lined gateway to New England, the committee developed a comprehensive plan to plant hundreds of new trees along the roadway.

Established in 2019, the committee worked closely with local and state governmental officials in order to gain approval for 370 planting sites. The selected trees, a mix of shade and ornamental species, were carefully chosen to suit the growing conditions of each location.

After years of careful planning and discussion, the State of Connecticut approved Phase 1 of the planting plan in 2024. That autumn, the first trees were planted, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for Putnam Avenue.
