Commemorative Tree Program

Create a lasting legacy by planting a tree in Greenwich.

Working in partnership with the Town of Greenwich Superintendent of Parks and Trees/Town Tree Warden, this program is designed to encourage the planting of trees on municipal lands in Greenwich, while creating a meaningful and lasting legacy.

Honor the memory of a special individual. Commemorate a notable event such as a birthday, anniversary,  graduation, or any special occasion.

Average donation per tree is $500. Park and specimen trees may be $1,000 or more. Discounts are offered to school and youth organizations.

The Tree Conservancy works with the Town Tree Warden who makes the final determination as to location and species of tree to be planted.

FAQs

When will the tree be planted?

Commemorative trees will be planted at an appropriate time, generally from April 1 through October 30th. The Town of Greenwich may extend, shorten or delay planting of trees dependent upon weather conditions.

Where will the tree be planted?

The final location for the planting of all commemorative trees will be at the discretion of the Town Tree Warden.

What does my donation pay for?

Prices include the purchase, planting and administrative costs associated with the tree planting and a tax-deductible donation to the GREENWICH TREE CONSERVANCY. Trees will be approximately 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Specimen trees will cost more depending upon selected variety and location.

Will a plaque be placed on the tree?

The town does not currently allow plaques on trees. However, following the planting of the tree, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy will provide you with a certificate officially recognizing the commemorative tree. The certificate includes the name of the honoree/event, tree species, general location of the tree, and the date of planting.

Is there a guarantee?

All trees will be given a one-year guarantee by the Town. The Town will provide one replacement tree at or near the original planting site should the commemorative tree fail to survive.

Who owns the tree?

Commemorative trees shall become the property of the Town of Greenwich immediately upon planting on town land.

Will there be a record of the tree?

Trees planted as part of this program will become part of a formal record of commemorative trees planted on municipal lands.

Can I make a custom donation?

For custom donations, please email us. The number of trees and species will be decided upon in a discussion with GTC and the Town of Greenwich Superintendent of Parks and Trees/Town Tree Warden.
